Why dogs wear pajamas

Pajamas aren't just for photos, though they're good for those too. A light sleeping layer genuinely helps several kinds of dog:

• Short-haired and thin-coated breeds that feel a cold bedroom in a way a double-coated dog never will
• Senior dogs carrying less body fat and circulating heat more slowly
• Small breeds, which lose warmth fast overnight because of their size
• Heavy shedders, where a full-body layer keeps loose hair off beds and sofas
• Dogs recovering from a clip, surgery or a skin flare-up, where a soft barrier stops constant scratching without a cone

Choosing the right fabric

Indoor heating makes a bigger difference than the outdoor temperature. A dog sleeping in a heated room rarely needs fleece; one in a cold hallway or a draughty bedroom often does.

Getting the size right

Pajamas need a closer fit than most dog clothing, because loose fabric twists overnight and the dog wakes up tangled. Measure three things before ordering:

• Back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail
• Chest girth at the widest point, just behind the front legs
• Neck circumference where a collar sits

Breed name alone won't tell you the size. Two dogs of the same breed can sit two sizes apart, so measure rather than guess. If your dog is between sizes on chest girth, size up.

Care

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, turned inside out to protect the print. Tumble dry low or lay flat. Skip fabric softener, which coats the fibres and shortens the life of both the print and the cuff elastic.

Can my dog sleep in pajamas every night?

They won't stop shedding, but they contain a large share of it. Dogs also shed from the head, legs and tail, so expect a reduction rather than an end to it.
